CRAVEN councillors look likely to be given £1,000 for another year to give out to deserving causes in their wards.

Some concerns were raised about the scheme, which was run as a pilot last year, but policy committee members said it should continue.

Cllr Eric Jaquin said he had not been able to spend his allocation in his Skipton East ward because projects he wanted to support, such as an additional dog waste bin, had failed to meet the criteria.

Councillors were also told although several deserving projects had been supported, £3,500 of the total £30,000 budget - from the council's revenue budget and new homes bonus money - had not been handed out.

Sharon Hudson, the council's communications and partnerships manager, said the aim had been to empower local groups, but that more publicity would be carried out which would hopefully lead to more applications.

She added grants had gone to a number of groups who would not have applied for money under the former community grants scheme.

They included £110 to Long Preston and Hellifield Guides to buy a new tent and defibrillators for Gargrave, Barden and Thornton-in-Craven.

Bradley was given £630 for a village marquee, while Ingleton Skatepark received £1,500.

The project to receive the highest amount was Studio 1 animation workshops, which received £1,900 after applications were sent to ten separate councillors.

Cllr Simon Myers said while he had not been in favour of the scheme he thought with some joined up thinking, it should be allowed to continue for another year.

And he suggested that ward members talk to each other and support projects in wards other than their own.

"I would like to think as members we are not that partisan that we can't help out other wards," he said.

Councillors recommended in future setting a £2,000 maximum amount for any one project.

It will now be up to the full council to make the final decision at its meeting in August.
