STUDENTS of Brooklands School in Skipton celebrated achieving the national John Muir Volunteering award at their annual garden party.

Skipton Mayor Andrew Rankine attended the event to celebrate the work carried out over the year by post 16 students in the school's bungalow garden, and by nurturing wild spaces.

The students have had support from Sarah Deane from the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust who came along to present the award certificates.

They also received a surprise award from the North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP) Drax project Reinvent semi finals, in which the students had submitted ideas and plans to improve Aireville Park.

Following the semi-finals in York, they presented with the NYBEP chief executive's Cup from Engineering Inspirations cup by Emma Thomas from NYBEP.

Teacher Mags Allen, said: "The garden party was a great success and we were thrilled that Skipton's mayor was able to come and open the event. We also want to thank all the local business and organisations that have supported us in our work this year. "
