IT was all smiles at Settle College on the announcement of their A level results, the schools high standard being maintained.

Charlotte Green, who achieved A* grades in chemistry, maths, further maths and the Extended Project Qualification, with an A in biology, secured her place at Oxford University to study biochemistry.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic,” said Charlotte. “Getting an offer from Oxford was such an achievement, but getting these results to confirm my place is just amazing.”

There were others who were equally proud of their results, with 49 percent of the cohort achieving the top grades of A*, A and B, and those achieving A* and A grades above the national average.

Most importantly, the vast majority of students secured their first choice university places, said executive headteacher, Andrew Taylor.

“We're delighted with the achievement of our A Level students across the board. Given the significant changes to many A Level subjects this year, a very high standard has been maintained with some outstanding individual achievements.

"Some students have overcome significant personal circumstances to gain these grades and they should be especially proud. We wish them all well as they embark upon their University life or apprenticeships.”

Lucy Toothill, who achieved an A* in English literature, an A in history and a B in psychology, was delighted with her results.

She said: “Settle College has been a fantastic experience and the teachers have been inspiring. The English teachers fuelled my passion for the subject and I am now going on to the University of Sheffield to study literature. I can’t thank them enough for their support.”

There was a 100 percent pass rate in almost all subjects, with many areas performing exceptionally well and the average grade for all subjects a C+, the same as 2016.

Sophie Marshall, who exceeded her own expectations, gained her first choice place at the University of Leeds to study midwifery.

“I can’t explain how happy I am. I found A levels extremely difficult and I worked so hard leading up to my exams. Now I have these results it feels amazing.”

Simon Tarbox, who will be going to Newcastle University following a year of travelling, said, “I have really enjoyed Settle College. I have been able to fulfil my potential and get a place at my first choice of university.”
