PLACES are still available for a few more hardy walkers prepared to tackle a long distance challenge to help people with dementia.

The Dementia Friendly Keighley group, which is working to make the town a more inviting place for people with this condition, is staging the Dales Traverse, a walk in the Upper Wharfedale valley covering nearly 28 miles.

So far 16 people have signed up for the walk, which will take place on September 16.

The walk begins under the face of Kilnsey Crag. It then takes in Kettlewell, Cam Head, Buckden Pike, Litton and Arncliffe before returning to Kilnsey via Mastiles Lane.

There is about 5,000 feet of ascent and, as with the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the aim is to complete the challenge within 12 hours. Visit ldwa.org for more details on the route.

The DFK's Maggie Marsden, who is organising the event, said: “We'd love to have a few more people join us to tackle this exciting, beautiful and rewarding challenge.”

She added that anyone interested should contact her on 07971 527525, or e-mail info@dementiafriendlykeighley.org

Bob Smith is the specialist adviser for the trek. He is the editor of Grough, the online outdoors magazine and is also an experienced hill and moorland Leader.

Keighley Cougars have offered the use of their minibus for the day and DFK chairman Steve Seymour will be leading the support crew.

Anyone interested in being part of the support group should also get in touch with Maggie.

People who can't do the walk but would like to sponsor it, can visit mydonate.bt.com/events/dalestraverse2017/446105 to make a contribution.
