SKIPTON Academy students are celebrating some of the school's highest ever results at GCSE.

Principal Richard McManus has described them as "remarkable" and praised the students, parents and staff for their hard work.

The school is facing being placed in special measures following an Ofsted inspection and Mr McManus has pledged to turn the school around.

The improvements came in English and maths despite the new examinations becoming more challenging than ever.

English and maths results were the highest ever achieved by the academy with 74 percent achieving grades nine to four in English language or literature and 66 percent achieving nine to four in maths with 61 percent achieving grades nine to four in both.

Many students gained "excellent" academic results such as George Squire who achieved grade nine in English language as well as an A* in history and four A’s in other subjects.

Mr McManus said: "This set of results are a testament to the hard work of the students, their parents and the staff and provide us with a good base to continue to improve going forward.

"We're very proud of the achievement of all our students and are happy that they have achieved the results that their hard work deserves."
