ALL the fun of the seaside came to Steeton – and everyone had a whale of a time.

St Stephen's Church staged Holidays at Home, on two Saturdays.

The church hall was transformed, with a beach, postcards, rock, seaside photos, daily newspapers to read, games and afternoon teas.

Morning coffee at Steeton Hall Hotel and a fish-and-chip lunch at the Trawlerman in Cross Hills were included in the first session.

Back at the church hall there were also crafts, nail painting, a gifts stall by the village Hub's knit and natter group, bingo and entertainment from Footnotes.

The second session featured a trip to Stephen Smith's garden centre followed by a roast dinner at the church hall, singing and the crowning of 'Miss Steeton on Sea', Mavis Brayshaw.

The initiative was aimed at over-50s, particularly those affected by loneliness who don't normally get away on holiday.

"It was a project by the community for the community – led by the congregation at St Stephen's," said Lynda Corser, for the organisers.

"The idea was to recreate the British seaside, with two days of fun, laughter and friendship for anyone over the age of 50.

"None of it would have been possible without the dedication and generosity of many people.

"Special thanks go to the Yorkshire Building Society and Steeton Parish Council for their donations to fund the initiative.

"Also, thank-you to the volunteers at Keighley Community Transport, to our wonderful catering team, to everyone who provided cakes etc for the afternoon teas and to everybody who helped make the event the success it was."
