POLICE took 'a while' to catch up with a speeding driver who averaged 88mph in his Audi on the A629 between Kildwick and Skipton, heard magistrates.

Accountancy student Rayyan Khan was told by magistrates it was a very high speed on a 60mph road and that he was lucky they were in a 'good mood'.

He admitted speeding, his licence was endorsed with five penalty points and he was fined £80 with costs of £85 and surcharge of £80.

Khan, 23, came to the notice of police who were parked up at the Kildwick roundabout at just after midnight on March 9, the Skipton court was told.

Because of a discrepancy with the number plate of his Audi 5, the officers started off after him, eventually stopping him in Gargrave Road.

The court heard in mitigation that Khan, a man of previous good character, of Beechwood Drive, Skipton, was a student at Nottingham University and that it had been a salutary lesson for him.

The issue with his car's registration had been an administrative error and had since been sorted out, the court was told.
