A 23 YEAR old was more than twice the drink drive limit after celebrating joining a new football team, heard Skipton magistrates.

A member of the public called the police after seeing Thomas Harris driving his Alfa Romeo erratically in Long Preston at 6.30pm on August 26, the court heard.

He was stopped by police within minutes and following a positive roadside test was taken to the police station where he was found to have 89 microgrammes of alcohol in 1000 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Harris, of previous good character, admitted drink driving. He had started playing for a new football team on the day and had drunk more than he had planned following the match. The court was told he had also been out the previous night celebrating his father's 60th birthday.

An apprentice builder, he would lose his work's van to drive, had been disciplined by his employer, but was not expected to lose his job.

Harris, of Main Street, Long Preston, was banned from driving for 22 months. He was also fined £300 and will have to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £30. If he completes a drink drivers rehabilitation course, his ban will be reduced by 22 weeks.
