KILDWICK Primary School enlisted an architect to help pupils enter a competition with the National Trust.

The youngsters attended a workshop to design a folly that could be constructed and displayed at one of the organisation’s most popular Yorkshire attractions.

The ‘Folly!’ architectural design competition will see the winning school’s installation design turned into reality at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, near Ripon, next year.

Mark Larham, of Airedale Architects, collaborated with the Kildwick school to support pupils through the designing process and introduce them to the world of architecture.

Aimee Rawson attended the sessions as Fountains Abbey project officer.

She said: “It’s wonderful to see the project creating so much inspiration in the pupils’ drawings. The workshops have been fantastic to see and we can’t wait to get all the entries in and see what fabulous designs the children have made.”

Class Four teacher Laura Paxford said the competition provided the children with an exciting and unique opportunity.

She said: “They’ve thoroughly enjoyed designing a folly and have also learned a lot about the job that an architect does.”
