ABOUT 50 people attended a consultation event run by Craven District Council on proposals to improve the route along Engine Shed Lane and link to the bypass.

Residents and local businesses were given a presentation of the proposals at the meeting on Tuesday, November 7, and had the chance to discuss them with council officers.

The proposed scheme aims to improve safety for pedestrians along Engine Shed Lane and reduce HGV traffic from the area around Skipton Station, New Carleton Road and Carleton Road.

The key features of the proposed scheme are a footpath along Engine Shed Lane, a link road to the bypass via Wyvern Park, street lighting along the route, and HGV restrictions to using Engine Shed Lane by Sandylands.

David Smurthwaite, Craven District Council’s Strategic Manager, said: “We’re pleased that so many people came along to hear about these proposals which will reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles travelling through the town centre and residential areas, and improve pedestrian safety.

“Residents appeared to be broadly supportive of the plans, which will also bring forward the development of more land for employment, which is much needed in the area.

“We will now continue to work closely with North Yorkshire County Council, businesses, developers, landowners and local residents, to make sure this scheme delivers the best outcomes for the district.”

The project is part of the £4.68 million Skipton Employment and Housing Growth scheme, which is being funded by the government’s Growth Deal scheme via the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership.

Further phases of the Growth Deal scheme will see the improvement of pedestrian routes from the railway station to the town centre, including the canal towpath.

Consultation has recently taken place asking for feedback on proposals to improve the canal waterfront in Skipton town centre. Plans will also be worked up for the redevelopment of the area surrounding the railway station.

The council now has to submit the final business case for the funding to the LEP, with a final decision expected by spring 2018. For further information, please visit: www.cravendc.gov.uk/engine_shed_lane
