HOSPITAL staff who have gone the extra mile beyond the call of duty, have been recognised at an Oscars-style ceremony.

Dozens of awards were presented to staff at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for putting patients at the heart of all they do.

The awards ceremony at Bradford City Football Club was sponsored by Sovereign Health Care, applauding 41 workers presented with Long Service Awards after clocking up a phenomenal 1,100 years of service to the NHS.

Certificates, plaques and prize money to be re-invested in winning teams’ work were handed out by Trust Chairman, Professor Bill McCarthy and special guest Russ Piper who is the Chief Executive of Sovereign Health Care.

The Trust’s Chief executive Professor Clive Kay said: “I was once again deeply impressed by our staff’s commitment, innovation and dedication to go the extra mile for our patients: it really is what makes Bradford Hospitals brilliant. The quality of nominations was extremely high and our judging panels had a difficult task choosing winners. I would like to thank all those who took the time to submit a nomination and congratulate all of those who were successful.”

This year there were three prizes for Team of the Year and three single winners.

The Finance and Performance Excellence Award went to Corinne Wood who works as the Trust’s Temporary Staffing Manager, streamlining the booking of agency doctors and other health professionals making significant savings.

The Excellence in Collaboration Award was awarded to Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon

Chris Bem who leads a Well Bradford project to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Girlington.

The Excellence in Care Award was presented to Sara Dixon who helped transform hand services in the Trust and was involved in setting up physiotherapy clinics alongside the trauma clinic every day of the week, providing one stop patient care.

The Learning Excellence Award was shared by Wendy Milner, who is a Senior Sister at Intensive Care and Ward 29 Sister, Jacqui Smith for their work to cut the cases of pressure ulcers across the hospitals.

The Valuing People Award was given to Malik Latif, Medical Records Team Co-ordinator, for being so positive and keeping his staff happy.

There were 50 nominations for Team of the Year which was won by the BRI’s Ward 28 Orthopaedic, Breast and Trauma team. The Chief Executive’s Unsung Hero Award went to Ben Martin, who works on the IT Helpdesk and mentors trainees just starting out on the road to employment. The Deputy Chief Executive’s Unsung Heroes Awards went to the Trust’s Directorate Managers for playing a key role when the electronic patient records (EPR) system went live in the autumn.

Last but not least, Shirley Hannan, a former nurse who retired this year after 57 years, was given a special Lifetime Achievement Award.
