POLICE are appealing for witnesses to help in their investigation of a suspicious fire that took place in an empty listed building in Skipton.

The fire at the former St Stephen's School in Gargrave Road, next to the entrance of Ermysted's Grammar School, broke out in the early hours of Saturday.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the circumstances of the blaze were being investigated after it was deemed 'suspicious' by the fire service.

"Forensic enquiries have been carried out at the scene as part of the effort to identify those responsible," said the spokesman.

Firecrews from Skipton, Grassington and Earby attended the fire, after receiving the call at just after 5am. Firefighters used breathing apparatus and four hose reel jets to get the fire under control.
