THE winter of 1947 was one of the two harshest of the last century in Britain, as massive amounts of snow fell to cause huge disruption. In the Dales, villages were cut off for weeks and sub-zero temperatures caused severe hardship for humans and animals. But there was some enjoyment too, especially for children - as here for eight-year-old Ken Brown, sat astride the horse, who supplied this photograph. Ken, of The Hawthorns, Sutton-in-Craven, is pictured with his father, John Willie Brown, who lived and worked at Manor House Farm, Cray, and the Brayshaw twins, John and Alan, who were brought up as members of the family. Ken recalls having to help dig sheep out of the snow most mornings - and also that his school, Kettlewell Primary, along with very many others in the Dales, was closed for weeks!
