STAFF at Craven District Council have been awarded two official pats on the back.

Local residents have given it a high mark for satisfaction and its customer and benefit services have been awarded the Charter Mark by the Cabinet Office, awarded to public sector organisations in recognition of achieving high levels of customer service.

The 2006 general satisfaction survey, a statutory service undertaken every three years, showed that 60 per cent of Craven residents were satisfied with the overall service provided by the council. This placed Craven as the joint top performing authority (with Ryedale) across North Yorkshire.

The same survey showed that 92 per cent of residents were satisfied with the council's waste collection service.

This result puts the council top of all authorities in North Yorkshire and joint top (with five other districts) out of all district authorities in England.

Satisfaction with a range of other services also compared well to other authorities nationally and across North Yorkshire.

Coun Mark Wheeler, who bears the title of "portfolio holder for transforming the council" said: "It reflects the commitment to improve services for all residents and shows that continued investment is making a real difference to the lives of local people.

"However, we are not complacent. As well as some good results, the survey also tells us where residents are less satisfied.

"We will be reviewing the results and seeking to make further improvements in the future."
