THE owner of a Harris hawk which attacked and injured a Jack Russell terrier while walking with its owners in Lower Grass Wood, Grassington, last month is being urged to contact police.

PC Simon Crossley, North Yorkshire Police Wildlife Crime Co-ordinator (Partnerships ) is also spreading his search to the British Falconry Association and the Independent Bird Register.

"The dog owner has been in contact with me and the animal had sustained quite extensive injuries to its mouth requiring veterinary treatment," he said.

"I would like to speak with the birds owner to offer advice and to prevent any further incidents.

"The act of flying a Harris hawk is not in question, unless it is being used for unlawful purposes such as taking game without permission of the landowner when poaching offences or Wildlife Crime offences may then be considered."

"The dog owners are still, understandably , very distressed about this incident and have been left with a substantial vet bill."

Sally, the Jack Russell is owned by the Woollacott family who live in Sutton-in-Craven and is recovering well following treatment at Ashlands veterinary surgery in Cross Hills.

Sally was attacked as they walked by the side of the river Wharfe. Her mouth suffered a talon injury as she was dragged along.
