AFTER last week’s picture of Carleton’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ pantomime in 1935, we feature another photo sent in by Rosamund Mitchell, of Oakworth.

This week’s was taken at Grange Farm, Carleton, in the early 1920. Mrs Mitchell says: “The farmer, I think called Mr White, is in the centre. My grandfather, William Thornton, is holding one cow - he was the farm man.

“ Kenneth Thornton, his only son, is holding the other cow. I presume the other lad is Mr White’s son.

“They are ready to walk the cows to Skipton Auction Mart.

“The only way I can date the photograph is that Kenneth Thornton was born in 1913. He was killed in North Africa in 1942.

“He had three sisters but his loss nearly broke Grampa.”

Mrs Mitchell adds: “The farmers’ huge caps amused us.”
