PEOPLE are being challenged to tackle Yorkshire's Three Peaks on Sunday, July 15, and help raise funds for The Bone Cancer Research Trust based in Leeds.

And among those taking up the test are Janet and Steve Barker whose daughter, Emily, died aged 22 after a two year gruelling fight against the disease.

They aim to climb Penyghent, Whernside and Ingleborough - a total of 5,200ft - and walk 24 miles in 12 hours.

Steve said: “In completing this challenge I want to raise further funds to help the Bone Cancer Research Trust raise awareness and find a cure for this devastating disease.

"I am looking forward to this challenge as I will be with like-minded individuals in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.

"I am under no illusion this will be a ‘walk in the park’. Having suffered a heart attack and had a quadruple bypass during Emily’s illness, the way she dealt with her illness inspired my recovery. Her attitude to adversity and challenge was an inspiration to us all.

"Since we lost Emily to osteosarcoma in December 2015 we have set up a tribute fund to raise valuable funds for BCRT and with the help of the many people, who knew and loved Emily, we have raised over £30,250 to date.”

Amy Scorer, Challenge Events Fundraising Manager, said Steve and Janet had started their training and recently trekked Whernside.

"Fellow walkers asked them why they were taking on the challenge and when they told them about Emily and the Team Bones Trek, they were moved to make donations. Steve and Janet were extremely touched by their kind gestures.

“The response from our supporters has been incredibly overwhelming and the Team Bones Trek has turned into so much more for the charity, it is bringing our community together.

"Researchers in the field of primary bone cancer, healthcare professionals and family and friends of those that have been affected by, or have lost loved ones to primary bone cancer, will be walking alongside team members from the charity.

"This is a challenging, but incredibly rewarding trek which will leave people in awe of the outstanding beauty of the Yorkshire Dales along with an incredible sense of achievement."
