AN ORANGE guy helped Kildwick Primary School celebrate its bronze award.

Herbie the Carrot visited the school to present a Food for Life Bronze award for its healthy and climate-friendly attitude to food.

The school is working with Food for Life, part of the Soil Association, to transform food culture at the school and its local community.

As part of the Bronze Award scheme, Kildwick serves seasonal school meals, 75 per cent of which are freshly prepared by experienced school cook, Donna Howarth.

The school also gives every pupil the opportunity to visit a farm, cook, and participate in food growing activities during their time at school.

Pupils and parents are involved in making improvements to the school’s menu and dining experience.

Independent research, summarised in a new report entitled ‘Good Food for All’, highlighted the success of five years of Food for Life.

Evidence from three studies focused on areas such as children’s health, tackling inequalities, improving education, and local enterprise and sustainability.

Ruth Stacey, Food for life programme manager, visited school along with Herbie.

Food for Life has created network of over 4,500 schools across England committed to transforming their food culture.

It supports them to provide fresh, well-sourced and nutritious meals and improve their overall lunchtime experience.
