A STUDENT at a Barnoldswick high school has won tickets to a BBC Radio 2 event after creating a short story about a singing elephant.

Year 7 student Alexander Waddington joined other students from West Craven High School in entering the annual BBC Radio 2 500 Words competition, which encourages children aged between five and 13 to write an original story on any subject in 500 words or fewer.

School librarian Julie Boardman submitted the students’ stories to the competition, which received 131,798 entries in 2017, and recently received an email inviting Alexander and a guest to the finals event at Hampton Court Palace in June.

It will be broadcast live on Chris Evans’ Radio 2 breakfast show from 6.30am. Celebrities will read the winning stories live on the radio and to the Hampton Court Palace audience.
