TWO mini-diggers were set ablaze on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Silsden last night.
Firefighters from Keighley and Bingley had to abandon their fire engines and walk half a mile to the scenes of the fires.
They were unable to save the vehicles, which were being used by contractors as part of maintenance work on the canal.
A spokesman for Keighley fire station said the mini-diggers were about 50 yards apart and were fully light when his team arrived.
He said the road to Brunthwaite Bridge was too narrow for the fire engines.
He said: "We were a fair way off when we parked, so we had to make our way on foot carrying ultralight pumps. We used water from the canal."
