SKIPTON Refugee Support Group is hosting a talk next week by Gulwali Passerlay, an Afghan boy who arrived in England in 2007 after a traumatic journey and is now a UK citizen.
Gulwali studied at secondary schools in Bolton, making a big contribution to the community life of the town, before moving on to the University of Manchester.
In recognition of his achievements he was invited to carry the Olympic torch in its tour of Britain in 2012 - and was possibly the first Afghan ever to do so.
He wrote an account of his experiences in his book 'The lightless sky', and will be selling copies at the talk in Skipton.
The talk will take place at Christ Church, Skipton, at 7pm on Thursday, June 21 and will be followed by the group's annual general meeting.
Gulwali is also due to talk on Wednesday afternoon (June 20) at Upper Wharfedale School, Threshfield.
