A SELFIE Quest will kick-off a special event bringing Silsden people together in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox.

The Hive, Silsden’s community centre, will host a Great Get Together on Saturday, June 23 along with many other groups across the country.

The social events are being held between June 22 and 24 and have been inspired by West Yorkshire MP Jo, who was killed on June 16, 2016.

The events celebrate Jo’s first speech in Parliament, when she stated: “We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.”

The festivities at the Hive on Elliott Street – formerly Silsden Youth and Community Centre – will begin at 1pm with the Selfie Quest then a community celebration from 2pm.

Jill Cook, director of Silsden Youth CIC which runs The Hive, said the group was delighted to be hosting the event to bring the community together.

She said “ After the recent #gasgate in Silsden, we truly know how to come together in times of need and now it’s time for a celebration for everyone to join in and have fun!”

Jill described the Selfie Quest as a kind of treasure hunt, instead of treasure, when participants reach each destination they take a team selfie and send it to us.

“There will be first, second and third prizes for the best team selfies. Pre-registration is required by contacting Leanne Caveney on 07736 979630 or leanne.caveney@thehivesilsden.co.uk.”

Entry costs £5 per team (maximum five people per team). The Selfie Quest will begin at 1pm in the Punch Bowl car park and will finish at The Hive.

Jill added: “Our celebration then starts at The Hive from 2pm. Refreshments will be available to buy, including cakes and scones with jam and cream, made and sold by Crumbs, and both hot and cold drinks. There will be a bar if you’re after a nice cool lager or cider, run by The Hive volunteers.”

The band Kindred will play rock hits from 3pm, and there will be children’s fun and games in the multi-use games area outside.

At 4pm the winners of the Selfie Quest will be announced, before the end of the event.

The Hive is managed by Silsden Youth CIC, a non-profit organisation who took over from the council in April 2016 to avoid the centre from being closed.

Jill said: “Since taking over we have increased the number of people using the centre, we have put on various events for all age groups and we intend to do much more for our community in 2018 and beyond.” For information about either the Great Get to Together in Silsden or The Hive, find the group on Facebook or call Leanne Caveney on 07736 979630 or email leanne.caveney@thehivesilsden.co.uk
