TWO-time Olympic medallist Tom Ransley is set to officially open the new Aldi Barnoldswick store tomorrow.

Swapping his oars for the aisles, the Team GB star, who claimed gold with the men's eight rowing team at Rio in 2016, will perform the ribbon cutting ceremony at 8am, before heading to a local primary school to host a morning assembly.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, which is a stone’s throw away from the new supermarket, will welcome Tom and learn all about the Olympian, including his career to date and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

This comes as part of the supermarket’s initiative, “Get Set to Eat Fresh”, which hopes to inspire 1.2 million schoolchildren to learn about the benefits of cooking fresh, healthy food.

The first 30 shoppers to arrive on the morning will each receive a complimentary bag full of fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s Super 6 range, handed out by, gold medallist Tom.

Tom said: “I’m really looking forward to my morning in Barnoldswick. I hope to inspire customers and pupils to stay active and maintain a healthy, balanced diet.”

Store manager Kieron Sethi added: “We’re delighted that Tom will be joining our grand opening celebrations to welcome the local community to their new Aldi store. We’ve got some fantastic opening week Specialbuys on offer, so we look forward to opening our doors to everyone tomorrow.”

The new Barnoldswick store, located at 1 Crownest Road, spans over 1,254 square metres of retail space with 120 car parking bays.

It will be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

The store launch has created 28 jobs for the local economy.
