THIS is another picture from the collection of ‘Skipton’s Mr Sport’ Roger Ingham, which features boxing great Kit Pompey, who lived in Gargrave for many years before his death in 1997.

Roger recalls that the occasion was a 60th birthday party for Kit, centre, at the Johnson and Johnson Social Club in Gargrave. Also pictured, next to him, are Alan Tanner and Hughie Mackey, themselves boxers of distinction, along with Mackey’s son Frank Grant, left, who himself won British and Commonwealth boxing titles, and right, Charles Cambridge, one of Pompey’s closest friends.

Kit Pompey was born in British Guyana and at the height of his boxing career, figured among the leading contenders for the British Empire middleweight title. He, Alan Tanner and Hughie Mackey were among the first people to arrive in Britain from the Caribbean on board HMS Windrush, Roger recalls.
