GLUSBURN schoolchildren are on the podium to their sporting activities.

The village’s Community Primary School has achieved the School Games Bronze Mark Award for the first time.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, and facilitated by the Youth Sport organisation.

The Games Mark rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and in the community.

Glusburn School sports coach Adam Smith said the award recognised activities during the whole of the recent academic year.

During the year, Glusburn children won a football tournament, came third in swimming, were runners-up in rounders, and also took part in netball and cricket tournaments.

The school had a record number of children competing in the county finals of the inter-schools cross-country running contest.

Mr Smith said: “This is the first time that the school has applied for the School Games Mark and we are delighted that we have been recognised for our success.

“With a number of young people competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport.

“This includes those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.”

As part of the application, the school was asked to fulfil criteria in participation, accommodation, workforce and clubs.

Mr Smith added: “We are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. We look forward to applying once again in 2019 where we hope to achieve a higher award!”
