HUNDREDS of talented young athletes are due to take to the countryside around Giggleswick School for the English Schools Fell Running Championships on Sunday.

The event will also host the launch of a new book by children’s author Tom Palmer, set in the worlds of fell running and the First World War., and whose own daughter is set to take part in the event.

The races, for 11 to18 year olds, include steep climbs, rough terrain, stream crossings and exhilarating descents, plus stunning views over North Ribblesdale and the Ribble Valley for the family and friends expected to cheer on the runners.

Tom Palmer’s new book, Armistice Runner, is a story for nine year olds and over and set both in the present day and amid the First World War when the role of mountain runners was vital for communications towards the end of the conflict. The book is about a girl struggling with her grandmother’s Alzheimer’s. She loves fell running and discovers her great-grandfather’s First World War diaries, which she hopes to use to reach out to her gran.
