Winner Elise has given dog a good name

More than 400 school children across the district have entered competitions to raise awareness of the "Keep Craven Clean" campaign.

Craven District Council invited children to name the campaign's mascot - a giant furry dog - and to design a new logo to appear on the council's dog waste bags.

Eleven-year-old Elise Robinson from Cowling Primary School won the mascot competition, naming him Digby, and eight-year-old Jessica Piper from High Bentham Primary School designed the winning logo.

Coun Paul Whitaker, portfolio holder for protecting and enhancing the environment, said: "If we can educate the next generation about keeping our environment clean, then we are building hope for the future. We recognise that children have a lot of power in persuading their parents and relatives to change how they live such as by recycling more, not dropping litter or cleaning up after their dogs.

"The standard of the entries was very high and I was pleased and proud by the amount of support shown by Craven's schools and pupils for Keep Craven Clean'."

The campaign aims to tackle problems with litter, illegal waste disposal, graffiti, dog fouling, fly-posting and fly-tipping.

Further information about the campaign is available on the district council's website, www.cravendc.gov.uk.
