Housing group launches 24-hour helpline

Craven Housing Association (CHA) says its 24-hour emergency support service will improve the lives of older people and people with disabilities.

Supporting People will be run by professionally trained support workers for older or disabled people who rent or own a home in the Craven district.

Customers may also be eligible for a Supporting People subsidy, enabling them to save hundreds of pounds.

The scheme includes personal emergency call equipment, professional help and advice, a personal support plan, 24-hour home support, partnership working with social services, GPs and local hospitals and home security devices.

Linda Addis, manager of supported housing for CHA, said: “Previously only CHA tenants were eligible for subsidy, but since changes last year we are now able to offer the subsidy to all residents in the area as well as providing the full 24-hour alarm with warden service. The changes we’ve made have been far-reaching and our organisation and staff acknowledge the positive impact this service has had on the whole community.

“Our main aim is to help elderly people in Craven live safely and securely while retaining the independence of remaining in their own homes.”

Ruby Barlow, from Skipton, started with Supporting People after she fell and broke her hip. While in hospital she was given details of CHA’s emergency alarm and warden service.

She said: “Initially I found it hard to admit I needed this kind of service, but now I think it’s wonderful. Both my son and I have the piece of mind of knowing if I fall again or need any help in an emergency, all I have to do is press the alarm.”
