Memorial bike ride honours champs

10:50am Sunday 8th March 2009

A memorial cycle ride to honour the lives of two champion downhill mountain bikers will take place on Saturday in Langcliffe.

Ben Ineson, 18, from Selside, and Tom Rodgers, 21, from Langcliffe, were killed in a car accident on January 14 on the A65 near Settle. The pair were good friends and their deaths left a huge gap within the world of downhill racing.

Friends, cycling colleagues and former workmates at All Terrain Cycles, in Saltaire, have got together and organised a memorial ride around the Settle Loop part of the Pennine Bridleway and an evening event at Knight Stainforth Caravan Site. Proceeds will go into a memorial fund.

Around 150 people are expected to take part in the ride and are asked to meet on the village green at 1.30pm.

This will be followed by two minutes of noise – as opposed to the usual two minutes of silence – to honour the young men. Participants are asked to take along anything noisy, such as drums, whistles and bells.

Anyone can take part, but there is no parking in Langcliffe on the day and entrants need an adequate bike and helmet.

For the evening party at Knight Stainforth Caravan Site, three bands and DJs will provide music from 6.30pm. There will be a raffle and auction. Tickets are £5 per person.
