A movie theme brought the crowds to Skipton’s popular Waterway Festival over the bank holiday weekend.

Despite Monday’s cold and wet weather, the three-day festival has been hailed another great success.

Thousands crowded into the town from Saturday to see the record number of boats dressed to the nines for the Skipton at the Movies theme.

There was also a variety of entertainment, including the South London Jazz Orchestra, belly dancers and magic shows.

Vaughan Jones, a director of Skipton Waterway Festival, said: “It was an excellent event, despite the cold weather on Monday. Everything went ahead and everything was wonderful.

“It never ceases to amaze me the trouble people go to with their boats. Some of the entries for the movies theme were fantastic.”

Popular winner was the Towering Inferno – which featured real flames – with runner up the Titanic.

“There was a really good rapport in the town. We were really lucky to get the South London Jazz Orchestra, who went down really well,” said Mr Jones.

The event attracted more boats than ever and Saturday – normally the quietest of the festival – proved to be very busy.

Mr Jones said the race was now on to raise money for next year’s event.

“The event is free and we do like to keep it that way. We do have lots of voluntary donations, but we could do with some sponsors for next year,” he said.
