Game show hailed a big success

The birdman challenge The birdman challenge

The sun shone on Broughton Game Show on Sunday – and organisers are hoping the proceeds will top last year’s £19,000.

There were all the usual attractions on the Broughton Hall showfield, while new features included a dressage event, a bicycle stunt display and a bigger poultry section.

There were plenty of takers for the Birdman Challenge, in which competitors attempt to make a non-powered flight across the river without getting their feet wet.

Despite some valiant efforts, the £1,000 prize money remained unclaimed for another year.

Among those taking part in the challenge was David Aynesworth, chairman of the organising committee.

“I improved my distance by a matter of inches,” he said. “I am sure I will succeed next year!”

The organisers are still counting the money, but say gate receipts are up on last year.

“We certainly hope to exceed the £19,000 raised last year,” said Mr Aynesworth. “We were really lucky with the weather and it was a good day.”

The proceeds are split between Craven’s two rescue organisations – the Grassington-based Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association and the Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation.

“The game show’s success is due to the hard work of the two organisations and in particular Chris Baker, who puts up the stalls and takes them down afterwards. I cannot praise them enough,” said Mr Aynesworth.
