A Cross Hills brewery is celebrating the opening of a new shop on the site by brewing its first lager.
Naylors Brewery, which is located at the Midland Mills industrial estate, on Station Road, has opened a shop called the Beer Emporium & Home Brew Supplies which will not only stock its own beers, but also a selection of 100 beers from around the world.
The shop, which has a full licence to serve alcohol into the night (although it is only open during the day), has two hand pumps that will allow customers to have a little taste of the local brews on offer.
“We keep growing as time goes on,” said co-owner Stephen Naylor. “The shop opened two weeks ago and it’s another way to make revenue without too much expense.”
“We have a good range of bottles in stock, including organic and gluten-free beers.”
The shop also sells reusable flagons, which allow customers to take home local brews from the hand pumps.
In addition to its range of Pinnacle beers, Naylors does personalised beers and is currently in the process of brewing its first ever lager, Cross Hilsner.
“It’s a lager in the style of a German pilsner, using English hops and a locally sourced yeast,” said Stephen.
“We’re calling it Cross Hilsner because a lot of European beers are named after their village.”
Stephen, who runs the brewery with his brother Robert, said lager took a lot longer to brew than beer or ale.
“It will be a minimum of two months before it’s ready to drink,” he said.
He added that the brewery had to invest quite heavily in new equipment, which included purchasing lagering tanks for storage, a three-stage filtration unit, a carbonator from the Czech Republic and several kegs.
