Earby Youth Hostel will hold an art exhibition in conjunction with the town’s open gardens event on Saturday.
The hostel was opened in the 1950s as a memorial to Katherine Bruce Glasier, a pioneer socialist and social activist who lived at Glen Cottage, which now forms part of the complex.
The first Youth Hostel Association (YHA) warden was Mary Holt and she was assisted by her husband, Albert, who will be remembered by many as being the gas meter reader in Earby.
Albert was also a talented self-taught artist who could turn his hand to many subjects in oils, watercolours and pencil.
As part of the Earby Open Gardens event, not only will the hostel and grounds be open to view, but The Friends of Earby Hostel will also be showing an exhibition on the life and works of Albert Holt.
Visitors will also be able to view 20 gardens in the town.
The event begins at 11am from St Peter’s Methodist Church on Riley Street, where you can buy a £2 programme, with maps and descriptions of the gardens.
There will also be cake, bric-a-brac and plant stalls and a buffet lunch will be served.
