Rolls FC 8 Horton 0

Rolls FC entertained Third Division side Horton in the first round of the Craven Cup and progressed without any scares against a side that have not had the best start to their season.

Rolls made a couple of changes to their starting line-upn with skipper Lee Hall being rested, and replaced by Kevin Toland, and Paul Holgate coming in to replace Craig Walton in the middle of the park.

B put in good performances to give the management team something to think about for their next game.

Rolls started in confident mood but it took them some time to get their passing game going and although goalkeeper Lee Parkinson went untroubled, Horton pressed and worked hard to put the home side under pressure. However, with 15 minutes gone, the ever impressive Sean Smith broke into the area from the right and finished excellently from an angle to record his first goal of the season.

Not long after, Jason Wright scored the first of his four goals after he finished an excellent move. Wright’s second came when some good work from Damon Clark saw the ball land at Wright’s feet just inside the area and another excellent finish saw Rolls go 3-0 up.

Wright then completed a first-half hat-trick before the referee’s whistle ended what was a good half for the home side.

Despite being 4-0 up at half-time, Rolls were not entirely happy with their first-half display and the management team wanted to see an improvement in the next 45 minutes.

And it wasn’t long after the re-start that Wright scored his fourth when an excellent strike from outside of the box put Rolls 5-0 up and put the game well and truly beyond the visitors.

Rolls then made two changes with Matt Nutter replacing Mark Elliott and Jimmy McConville replacing Chris Owen. It was Nutter who made an immediate impact with his effort and determination finally being rewarded with an excellent headed goal from a Daniel Howard cross.

Clark was the next scorer after some great work down the right the striker had a simple tap in for a well-deserved goal.

Nutter then grabbed his second and Rolls’ eighth with a strike from outside the box which ended up in the back of the net.

Although winning 8-0, it wasn’t the best performance of the season so far and all the management team and players know that against a better side they could have been punished for some sloppy play.

However, teams are there to be beaten and it was good to see chances being taken and a clean sheet being kept.

Sean Smith was deservedly named man-of-the-match following an excellent all round display in the middle of the park.

Coach Robin Chapman said: “Despite not playing to the level we wanted to it is always good to get to the next round of the cup, plus the fact that we took our chances gives the players the confidence to keep our unbeaten run going.

We have some tough games coming up and all the players need to be focused on their game and working as a unit. We would like to have at least one good cup run this season so it’s pleasing to get off to a good start.”

p Rolls’ next game sees them play host to Second Division side Wilsden Juniors on Saturday in the first round of the Northern Plant Hire Trophy, kick-off 2pm, all support welcome.

Grindleton 2 Rolls FC 4

Rolls FC travelled to Grindleton looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season but under no illusion that it was going to be a difficult game as they have never come away with three points from Sawley Road.

A couple of changes were made to the starting eleven from the previous game with ’keeper Lee Parkinson returning to the side, along with Andrew Carson and Chris Owen. Kevin Toland also returned to the squad but had to settle for a place on the bench alongside Paul Holgate and Sean Lemon.

Rolls made life difficult for themselves and were 2-0 down within the first ten minutes. Mark Elliott conceded an early free-kick 25 yards out and the result was an excellent finish into the top corner. It wasn’t long after that the Rolls defence failed to cope with a ball through the middle and the home striker found himself one-on-one with Parkinson and he finished coolly.

It was then that Rolls found their feet and started to play football with full-backs Chris Parry and Daniel Howard finding plenty of space in wide positions.

Sean Smith was also influential in the middle of the park, working hard to break the play up and to create an opening to get his side back in the game.

Mid-way through the half, Parry played an excellent pin-point pass to striker Damon Clark, who found space to square for Owen to slot into an open net.

It was an excellently worked and well-deserved goal. Not long after Craig Walton popped up to score an equaliser with an excellent finish after the ball bobbled around in the area.

The game ebbed and flowed and Rolls were left off twice after Grindleton broke down the right only for the final ball to shoot across the face of the goal.

The half finished all square at 2-2 with Rolls happy to have got themselves back into the game.

The second-half was a scrappy affair but it was Rolls how came out on top; however they had two or three scares along the way.

With the score at 2-2, Grindleton hit the bar twice and Parkinson also had to pull off an excellent save to keep the ball out. But it was the locals who managed to get their noses in front when Owen got his second of the game and then Lemon, who came on to replace Elliott, finished at the back post.

Rolls were happy for the final whistle to be blown and to walk away with three points, and their unbeaten run still in tact.

Smith was awarded a well deserved man-of-the match award after a tireless display in the middle of midfield.

Bradley 1 Silsden Whitestar 6

All eyes were on Silsden in this derby clash and pre-match nerves from one or two showed on their faces.

Before the kick-off there was a minute’s silence for Chris Brown, Silsden’s number one supporter, and all 14 players for Silsden wore red and white arm bands which illustrated Chris’s favourite team, Sunderland.

Shooting up hill in the first-half, Silsden got quickly to grips with the narrow pitch and the slope, racing into a three goal lead before half-time. Tony Pleasants found himself with a hat-trick before the break after some sublime finishing.

After the break Silsden took their foot off the pedal, and gave away a sloppy goal when an easy clearance fell to Bradley’s striker, who casually slotted home from close range.

This seemed to spur Silsden on. Benny Mac, scored two goals in quick succession and substitute Oliver Schepisi scored with a low effort to take the tie well out of reach of Bradley. Twigg, Lund, Cadwallader and Pleasants all played well on a day where losing wasn’t an option for the ‘Big Brown Bear’.

Skipton LMS 6 Sedbergh 2

The return of Steve Carling helped Skipton LMS to turn in a much better performance than in their recent matches.

LMS opened the scoring after eight minutes with a good goal from Luke Howson, quickly followed two minutes later by a Kyle Telford goal and a second goal for Howson after 15 minutes. LMS spurned further good chances before Ian Craven scored on 31 minutes. Nathan Close pulled a goal back for Sedbergh just before half-time.

In the second-half LMS continued to miss chances until Howson completed a well-deserved hat-trick and Telford scored his second. Josh Arnold, keeping goal for the indisposed Will Freakes, had a sound game. Sedbergh never gave up trying and were rewarded with a second goal scored by Sean Gardner.
