North Craven First Responders scheme

Yorkshire Ambulance Service is setting up a new Community First Responder scheme in North Craven.

Eleven volunteers will provide immediate life-saving care to residents in Clapham, Austwick, Keasden, Wharfe, Feizor, Lawkland, Eldroth and the surrounding areas.

They will help in emergency medical situations, such as a heart attack, breathing difficulties or a collapse, in the vital minutes before the ambulance arrives. The scheme will “go live” on Monday March 1.

The volunteers have all been trained in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automatic defibrillator which delivers a controlled electric shock to restart the heart. The First Responders will also carry portable oxygen. Dave Jones, community defibrillation trainer for the ambulance service, said: “Community First Responders make a valuable contribution to their communities. “We know that in many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical. If effective treatment can be performed within those first minutes, lives can be saved and disability reduced. “Many people volunteer as a Community First Responder to gain experience, to help their local communities and some people have had personal experience of a loved one needing prompt medical attention and can see the value in this initiative. Volunteers come from all walks of life.”

Anyone wanting more information or wishing to volunteer should contact Mr Jones on 07917 053604 or email Dave.Jones@yas.nhs.uk.

In Lincolnshire we have an organisation called LIVES, from which has emerged the First Responders scheme. It has been up and running for quite a few years and works extremely well. The HQ is based in Horncastle, and the clinical director is a locally-based lady GP. Good luck to the new scheme.
