Battalion in town freedom parade

4:50pm Sunday 7th March 2010

Soldiers from The Yorkshire Regiment are preparing to parade through Skipton in June.

The 3rd battalion of the regiment, formerly known as The Duke of Wellington’s, was awarded freedom of Craven in May 2002.

And on Friday June 25 the soldiers will exercise their right to hold a freedom parade through the town.

Craven District Council has agreed to host the parade.

Councillors at last Wednesday’s full council meeting were told it would be an opportunity for residents to show their appreciation of the regiment and all members of the armed forces.

The request for the parade was made by General Sir Nicholas Houghton, colonel of the Yorkshire Regiment.

The freedom of Craven was transferred to The Yorkshire Regiment following the amalgamation of the Duke of Wellington’s with The Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire and the Green Howards.

The cost to Craven District Council of hosting the parade was said to be £1,000 for traffic management and risk assessment, £500 for refreshments and £75 for road closure.
