The Angel Inn at Hetton has raised a landmark £50,000 for a UNICEF Clean Water and Sanitation project in the Omo district of Ethiopia.
The pub’s fundraising efforts were started by the late owner Denis Watkins and, over the past eight years, 50p from every bottle of mineral water sold to diners has been donated to the project.
The UNICEF programme works with partners to drill wells and install water pumps, helps communities build lavatories and teaches life-saving hygiene to school children.
The ethical philosophy adopted by Denis is continued today through the Denis Watkins Charitable Trust. Several charity dinners are organised every year, with the money raised going to such causes as The Born Free Foundation in Africa and the Helpage International projects in Bolivia, South America.
Angel Inn partner Juliet Watkins said: “The support we have received from our customers has, over the years, been fantastic and we are extremely grateful.
“Our charitable work has also had a positive effect on our staff, with them donating their tips of their own volition from all the charity functions we organise.”
The Angel’s next charity dinner, “An English Country Garden”, will be on Thursday May 27 and will include a vegetarian gourmet dinner using locally-sourced Yorkshire produce and wines from the Ryedale Vineyards near Malton. All money raised will go to the UNICEF Clean Water programme.
