Five members of the Skipton Karate Centre on Broughton Road were successful in their black belt gradings at Harrogate.

Abigail Spence aged 12, Sagar Sonanis, 13, and Rian Hamilton, 12, gained their first dan black belts.

Adults Jacqui Bateson, first dan black belt and Bill Glaister, second dan black belt, completed the successful Skipton contingent.

In order to pass the students had to show a wide range of techniques, including kicking, punching and blocking combinations, kata, self-defence and fighting skills.

All of the disciplines had to be performed with a high degree of skill.

Chief Instructor Ian Spence said; “The worst part of the grading is waiting to start and waiting for your score. All of the students were very nervous as it means so much to them. Failure was not an option.”

And he added: “They need to keep training regularly now and who knows in two years time Abigail, Sagar, Rian and Jacqui could be taking their second dans and in three years Bill could be taking his third dan.

“But for the moment they need to enjoy their achievements and be proud of what they have accomplished.”

Rebecca Spence, who also runs her own club at Craven Swimming Pool, was promoted to fourth dan black belt in recognition of her achievements in karate.
