Giggleswick Playgroup and Pre-school could close unless it can find more children.

It has been located in the parish rooms for more than 40 years and has cared for thousands of local children.

But its future is being threatened by a lack of under fives in the area.

It has been told that it must boost its numbers within a matter of weeks or close with the loss of four jobs.

Playgroup leader Lyndsey Jennings said: “It would be sad for children, staff, parents and the community to lose such an enriching setting. We pride ourselves on being a traditional playgroup and it would be devastating if this unique playgroup has to draw to an end.”

Now the playgroup is appealing for parents to register their children, even if only for one morning a week.

Playgroup secretary Lucy Lawson said: “We feel really uncomfortable having to appeal to the public to bring their children to us. We have exhausted every promotional avenue possible and this really is our last big push before it’s too late.”

Chairman Rachel Brummitt added: “Giggleswick Playgroup has been here for decades and it is very sad that the demand isn’t there anymore. There has been a great deal of improvements made recently to create a rich, stimulating environment.

“We urge parents wishing for their child to come to us to please get in touch by next Friday, March 4.”

Parent Kathryn Booth said: “Giggleswick Playgroup offers a great place for children to play, learn, create and experience new things. It will be a great shame if it closes as my son really enjoys his time there.”

The playgroup currently runs sessions Monday to Thursday from 9.15am to 3pm and on Fridays from 9.15am to 12.15pm. Anyone who can help should pop into the playgroup, or email slawson712@btinternet.com.
