Craven is celebrating the national Festival of British Archaeology with a series of events, ranging from exhibitions to guided walks.

The Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group is staging two exhibitions, one about 18th century Whitfield Syke Mill, Embsay , runs at Skipton Library until Monday and the other, about “boskins, booses and barns”, can be viewed at Long Ashes Park, Threshfield, until next Saturday, July 28.

Greenhow Local History Club will lead a guided walk on Saturday, exploring the area’s lead mining heritage while a family-friendly, table-top “dig” and artefact identification event will be staged at Tosside Community Hall on Sunday, with sessions at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.

Also on Sunday, Ingleborough Archaeology Group is giving people the chance to learn more about the Viking style settlement at Ribblehead.

It is taking part in Natural England’s open day at the Ribblehead Quarry National Nature Reserve by offering free short guided walks to the Viking-style settlement at Gauber.

And the National Trust will offer a beginner’s guide to archaeology with a guided walk around Upper Wharfedale on Wednesday.

Also in Upper Wharfedale, the Bordley Project is staging four events centred on the ancient township.

The first is an afternoon packed with archaeologically related activities for all the family at Kilnsey Village Hall next Thursday, July 26, from 1pm to 5pm.

It will be followed at 7.30pm by a talk on the history and archaeology of Bordley and the progress made to date by the Bordley Township Project.

The fun continues next Friday, July 27, with a family field day from 11am to 3pm. It will include a guided walk and activities exploring sites of early settlement and archaeological activity around Lantern Holes.

And the last Bordley event takes place next Saturday, July 28, at 10am, with a guided walk over rough terrain exploring the lead mining industry in and around the northern part of the township.

Skipton-based Craven Museum and Gallery is supporting the archaeology festival by holding a family flint knapping workshop next Saturday, July 28.
