Sun shines on Addingham gala day
2:38pm Thursday 19th July 2012 in News
The annual Addingham Gala escaped the ill fate suffered by many events this summer and even enjoyed some rare sunshine.
Despite some rain during the parade on Saturday, a good crowd made it onto the gala field to see the sun shine brightly on the races, stalls, rides and competitions.
MP Kris Hopkins judged the parade, choosing the Gala Queen float as the best float for its colourful interpretation of an English garden tea party and Addingham 2nd Brownies were named the best walking group for their representation of “Summer, Strawberries and showers – Wimbledon”
This year’s theme was “UK 2012 – Let’s Celebrate” and many village groups took the opportunity to do just that – following the City of York Pipe Band down the Main Street to the gala field.
Silsden Town Band entertained those taking tea courtesy of the Guides Senior Section in Addingham Memorial Hall and the young band of the Wharfedale Air Training Corps performed in the parade and on the field. Ilkley Karate Club gave a demonstration and hundreds of balloons were released by the Scouts.
Gala organisers said: “The gala team are always so grateful for all the hard working volunteers who come along and work late into the evening on Friday and from very early on Saturday morning to make sure everything is ready, and of course for all the marshals and helpers.”
Despite a smaller crowd than usual and some stall holders reporting lower takings, organisers are still hoping to distribute small grants to village groups in the autumn.
