Visitors are invited to have a free taste of hospital food while enjoying the attractions at Airedale Hospital’s 2012 open day.

Caterers Sodexo will be serving up bite-size samples to whet people’s appetite and demonstrate the quality of the food provided for patients during the event on Thursday.

The day will feature a set of 15ft-high model lungs on loan from the group Lily UK, to raise awareness of the cancer support provided at the hospital.

People can visit Airedale’s education centre between noon and 4pm, to take part in events and tours and gather information from various stalls. Free parking will be provided and there will be a room of activities specifically aimed at children.

Colin Millar, chairman of Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This is a fun day out for all the family and a great opportunity for people to get to know their local hospital and what it has to offer.

“It’s also a chance for visitors to find out more about what is discussed at board level in our annual general meeting and to meet our new governors.”

Among the other attractions will be a tour of the hospital’s Telehealth Hub to see how care can be provided in people’s own homes by consultants via a secure video-link.

Visitors will be able to try surgical techniques using a simulator, meet a Pets As Therapy dog called Sasha, and watch a dramatic demonstration of a fire team cutting a car open to save a trapped driver.

They can also experience a fitness taster session and put their clinical skills to the test on an eye examination model.

There will be a range of emergency vehicles on show, including an ambulance, fire engine, cave rescue Land Rover and a drink-driving simulator.

Staff from Airedale’s maternity, diabetes, nutrition, speech and language, neurology and physiotherapy teams will be on hand, along with newly-elected hospital governors.
