A pair of 15ft-high replica lungs was one of the star attractions at an Airedale Hospital open day.

The eye-catching inflatables were brought along by Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation (RCLF) to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer and show visitors how these organs work.

Nina Roberts, from RCLF, said: “It’s the first time we’ve brought the mega lungs to an event of this kind and we’ve had a really positive response.”

More than 700 people turned out to the event, which was staged on Thursday in a marquee and the hospital’s education centre.

Other highlights of the day were a dramatic demonstration of a fire team cutting a car open to rescue a driver, fitness taster sessions, tours of the hospital’s Telehealth Hub, a chance to taste hospital food and a challenge to try out surgical techniques using a simulator.

Colin Millar, chairman of Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We were delighted that a record number of people came along to our event and that there was so much interest in what is going on in our hospital.

“All our teams, including maternity, diabetes, nutrition, speech and language, neurology, physiotherapy and our new hospital governors were on hand to answer questions. They worked really hard to make sure the event was a success.”

A new section of the hospital’s website – airedale-trust.nhs.uk/YourHealth – was launched at the open day. The facility offers information about health and wellbeing to members of the public.
