A charity bowling match is being held in memory of a keen Sutton sportsman who died last year.
The match will remember Charlie Cadwallader and will raise money for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA).
Mr Cadwallader served as a cook in the Army’s catering corps and his youngest daughter, Anita Roberton, of Sutton, said that his family wanted to raise for the charity that helped her dad so much in the final few months of his life.
Anita said that her dad had always been very active, but as his health declined he found it hard to walk.
“Yorkshire’s always been his home and he loved going out walking and rabbiting,” said Anita. “He was an outdoors kind of guy.”
Charlie was also a long-time member of Sutton Cricket Club and played bowls at Sutton Park later in life.
But when his health started failing and he developed hip and leg problems, the SSAFA stepped in and provided him with a mobility scooter.
“It was because of the SSAFA that he was able to get out to see all his old haunts and other places he went as a child,” said Anita.
She also said the charity was going to install a special shower for Charlie, but he died at the age of 75 before the work could be carried out. Instead the association gave the money to his family to help pay for funeral costs.
“We were so grateful for what the SSAFA did, we have organised this event to raise money for them.”
The match will be held at Sutton Park on Saturday, from noon.
Entrants will have the chance to win a trophy and £50 prize and there will also be a pitch and putt competition for younger children and a disco at Cross Hills Social Club at 7pm. A pie and peas supper will be served and there will be bottle bingo and a raffle.
Anyone wanting to enter the bowls match or donate money or prizes for the raffle should contact Anita on (01535) 636892 or 07826 559100.
