As British athletes were winning gold medals at the Olympic Games, the Kilnsey Estate in the Yorkshire Dales was picking up two gold medals of its own in a top UK food award competition.

The Estate’s Oak smoked trout fillets and smoked fish chowder both won gold awards at the Great Taste Awards 2012, the first time that it has won two golds in the same year.

The scheme, run by the Guild of Fine Food, has been described as the epicurean equivalent of the Booker Prize and in 2012 a total of 8,807 different food and drink products were entered.

Kilnsey Estate manager Jamie Roberts, said: “We’re proud to still do things the old-fashioned way, producing local foods of the highest quality in small batches - everything is hand-made by our chefs.’ The award-winning smoked fish chowder and smoked fillets were sourced from rainbow trout grown on the Kilnsey Estate.

Judges this year included Masterchef winner and restaurateur Mat Follas, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge Charles Campion, food writers Lucas Hollweg and Xanthe Clay and more than 300 food buyers from leading food halls, delicatessens and farm shops, including Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.
