Hospital volunteer dies, aged 96

Gladys Gill, a founder member of the Friends of Airedale , has died aged 96.

Gladys was born into the Portlock family who for many years ran a removal firm in Keighley and married Norman Gill, who worked on the buses. The couple had no children.

Gladys joined the Friends of Airedale in 1970, the year that the Steeton hospital opened. In 2005 she was among seven founder members who received certificates for their service.

Gladys also staffed a hospital tea trolley with the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service.

She continued as a hospital volunteer until ill health forced her to step down.

She had spent the past five years living at Herncliffe care home in Keighley.
