Four Skipton fundraisers finished off a five-day driving challenge with a trip to the set of TV soap Coronation Street.

Keith Moorby, community champion at Tesco in Skipton, decided to drive from John O’Groats to Lands End in an old banger he bought for £150 to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s lifesaving work.

He was accompanied by three friends, Natalie Belcher, who works as checkout team leader at the store, Damon Ralph and Aaron Outhwaite.

They squeezed into the 12-year-old Renault Kangoo as they travelled the length of the country, via Inverness, Nottingham, London, Liverpool and Manchester where they visited the set of Coronation Street.

They hope to have raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK – Tesco’s charity of the year. Keith said: “I was really keen to come up with a fun way of supporting our charity of the year and this was a huge challenge. We had to drive 15 and 16-hour days to make sure we completed it. The trip went really well apart from one night where we could not find anywhere to sleep and had to pitch our tent in someone’s garden in a place called Straddlethorpe in Lincolnshire.

“We were so glad to get to the Coronation Street set where we were given a warm reception.

“It will all be worth it to raise lots of money to help Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists beat cancer.”

The money raised by Tesco stores, distribution centres and offices will be spent on supporting 32 early diagnosis and detection research projects in local communities across the UK.
