A59 closed after fatal crash near Bolton Abbey

Emergency services remain at the scene of a fatal crash on the A59 near Bolton Abbey The two-vehicle collision happened near the Hambleton Garage at about 2.50pm today.

It involved a green 4x4 pick-up truck pulling a sheep trailer that was heading towards Bolton Abbey and a small white car that had been travelling in the opposite direction, towards Skipton, in a long line of traffic.

A female front seat passenger in the car suffered fatal injuries while the female driver was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

The two male occupants in the 4x4 suffered facial injuries and have been taken by ambulance to Airedale Hospital for treatment.

The A59 has been closed in both directions - between the A65 junction in Skipton and the roundabout at Bolton Abbey - to allow the police to investigate the scene and recover the vehicles.

About 20 sheep from the trailer also required rounding up and were placed in another trailer.

Diversions have been put in place, but it is not known how long the road will be closed.

Witnesses or anyone with information that could assist the investigation should Sgt Pete Stringer or PC Paul Cockerill at the Skipton Roads Policing Unit on 101.
