MP calls for action to reopen Colne to Skipton railway

Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson has called for government action to reopen the Colne to Skipton rail line.

The Tory backbencher has put down a Commons motion on the issue. It reads: “I congratulate Skipton East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership (SELRAP) on its ongoing campaign to reopen the Skipton to Colne line.

“I welcome this government’s commitment to investing in transport infrastructure especially in the North West such as the Todmorden Curve.

“I note that 17,000 residents in Pendle have no access to rail facilities, that because of poor transport options 148 of the 279 most deprived wards nationwide are along the line of the railway between Shipley, Skipton and Blackburn, and that rail journey times from Colne to Liverpool or Leeds are an hour longer and to Manchester 45 minutes longer than in 1950.

“I encourage the Secretary of State for Transport to support SELRAP’s campaign to reopen the Skipton to Colne line.”

Yea, good idea, but where's the money going to come from? Oh wait though, If we all vote UKIP next time, and we get out of the EU money drain, one day of what we payed in, would mean £53.000,000 free for these sort of projects. Yes folks, to be a member of the EU club, costs us 53 million pounds every day. Now that doesn't seem good value for money to me. What do you think?

Well, the political advert apart, the money will come from the same pot all such projects are funded from, like the £500m+ being spent on the railways largely around Manchester, £200m+ on electrifying lines in Lancashire, and a whole lot more on High Speed 2. So why not £100m for Skipton-Colne, especially when the government is stressing infrastructure investment, and there are rail re-opening schemes popping up all over the country.

As the guy that founded SELRAP 11 years ago I am delighted it really is being taken seriously at long last, and congratulate all involved for their herculean efforts in striving to bring this important project to fruition. I trust Mr Stephenson's motion is yet another brick in the wall.

If it costs 8.8 million to restore a few hundred yards of the Todmorden Curve how much will this cost. Still I hope it does happen as it will make a huge difference to my journies into work. I'll probably be retired though before it does

Well if I thought, UKIP could win a general election. I would vote for them, and you could be sure of it. However, too many voters sit on their backside at election times. Then use that old cliché they are all the same. Excuse after excuse. What a difference it would if we once had a 100% turn out.
How many of our present MPs would still be MPs?

They won't win if people don't vote for them, but tell me what other choice there is? Unless your happy with more of the same old rubbish, I'm not.
