Fifteen injured servicemen and ex-servicemen took part in a charity day at Skipton Golf Club on Monday.

They joined teams from businesses across the country to raise money for the On Course Foundation, which helps severely injured servicemen and women rehabilitate through golf The day was organised by Grassington man David Rasche and SSP – the Halifax-based business he founded – at the club where he learned his golf more than 50 years ago.

“It was a super day and we have probably made about £11,100,” said Mr Rasche, whose stepson Mark Robinson is a lieutenant colonel serving in Afghanistan.

He is more than aware of the cost of the conflict as Mark is based at Camp Bastion which was attacked by Afghan insurgents on Friday.

“This is a cause close to all our hearts. We are aware of people being killed and wounded.

“This charity has tremendously positive results and, without doubt, it changes lives, helping with the physical and mental rehabilitation of injured servicemen.”

Among those it has helped is Gregg Stephenson, who lost both legs to an explosion in Afghanistan three years ago.

Gregg, who was a rugby player soldier, had never played golf before, but after coaching through the charity played off a handicap of 18 after only 18 months.

Gregg who lives in Foulridge, now works for the charity and has joined Skipton because it has buggies permanently available.

The charity day competition was won by a team from Skipton Building Society.
